Abstract
While tactile graphics on refreshable displays have proven effective helping blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals consume and comprehend pictorial content, only a few research focused on their needs to become tactile authors. To explore the possibility of tactile-based authoring and social sharing among the BLV community, we proposed TacChat as a technology probe to empower BLV people in practice of authoring and sharing tactile content. We conducted a user study within fifteen BLV participants to demonstrate the supportive value of TacChat and further probe into their preference, motivation and vision for tactile-based social experience. Our findings showcase that TacChat significantly enhances the effectiveness of information exchange and improves the experience of social sharing. Further discussion suggests that instead of being passive consumers, BLV individuals wish and are able to proactively express themselves, and even make difference to the social experience within BLV community.
