Prospective Students
I am looking for motivated, passionate, and talented graduate students who can work with me on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research to design future interactive technologies. If this interests you, consider applying to the SCIS Ph.D. program. I am also looking for undergraduate and graduate visiting students. See the following links to check if we currently have open positions: SMU HCI Research | Open Positions
To inquire about advising or collaboration opportunities, please send an email with the following information. I read all emails but may not reply to everyone. If you contact me without reading these guidelines, you're unlikely to receive a response.
- English Proficiency. You should be able to communicate fluently in both spoken and written English.
- Demonstrate Your Interest. Browse the active projects on my homepage and identify a topic that interests you. Review my published papers under that topic and select at least one to read thoroughly. If you remain interested, send me an email briefly explaining what you learned from the paper in your own words. We can start our conversation from there.
- Skillsets. Make sure to highlight your capabilities in your CV. My research typically involves developing interactive systems and requires programming skills. Feel free to share a project you're proud of (e.g., a paper/report, design artifact).
For Ph.D. Applicants I encourage you to contact me a few months before your intended start date with the following:
- Your CV (highlighting skillsets), and optionally transcripts and English proficiency test scores
- Email title: "HCI Ph.D. Applicant - [Your Name]"
- A brief explanation of why you want to work on HCI research
Following our initial meeting, I may assign a small task such as a literature review or rapid prototyping exercise.
For SMU Undergraduates I'm happy to supervise SMU undergraduates on research projects. Please send an email with:
- Your CV (highlighting skillsets) and transcripts
- If requesting Final Year Project (FYP) supervision, attach your proposal
- Email title: "HCI Undergrad - [Your Name] - [Your Request]" (specify the type of support needed, such as FYP mentorship and research assistant position)
Depending on my availability and project requirements, I may schedule a brief discussion with you.
For Non-Ph.D. Applicants and Non-SMU Students If you're interested in working with me but do not plan to pursue a Ph.D. at SMU and are not currently enrolled here, please note that I have limited bandwidth and funding available. However, opportunities may still exist for highly motivated and proactive individuals. In this case, title your email "HCI Visiting Research Student - [Your Name]" and send me your CV and why you are interested in working on HCI research with me.
